Reinforcement Activity 6
In Kirkpatrick’s level 2: learning, designers tie evaluations such as quizzes, final exams, etc. directly to objectives. The main focus of level two is to ensure participants are acquiring the intendended knowledge, skills, content, etc.
Let’s review my course Legos for Beginners. In my course, I included the following three objectives:
By the end of the course, students will be able to demonstrate creativity by constructing unique Lego structures.
By the end of the course, students will be able to apply problem-solving skills to overcome challenges presented in specific Lego building tasks.
By the end of the course, students will be able to collaborate effectively within groups to accomplish shared goals while creating a Lego building project.
To tie in Kirkpatrick’s level two, I had to create ways in which I would effectively assess the student’s abilities to show their success in reaching these objectives.
So I included the following assessments:
Assessment Name: Creative Lego Showcase
Associated Objective: 1
Assessment Description: In this assessment, students will unleash their creativity by designing and constructing a unique Lego structure. They will explore various building techniques, experiment with different combinations of Lego pieces, and employ imaginative approaches to create an original masterpiece. The assessment criteria will evaluate the originality, innovation, use of Lego elements, structural integrity, and overall aesthetic appeal of the student's creation.
Associated Objective: 1,2
Assessment Description: This assessment presents students with a series of intricate Lego building tasks designed to challenge their problem-solving abilities and ingenuity. Students will tackle each task individually, applying critical thinking skills to overcome obstacles, devise innovative solutions, and execute their designs efficiently. Assessment criteria will assess students on their approach to problem-solving, adaptability, creativity, precision, and the effectiveness of their solutions in meeting the specified criteria.
Assessment Name: Group Lego Project
Associated Objective: 1,3
Assessment Description: In this collaborative assessment, groups of students will embark on a complex Lego building project. Through effective teamwork, communication, and division of tasks, groups will work together to bring their collective vision to life. Assessment criteria will evaluate the quality of collaboration, communication within the group, equal distribution of responsibilities, problem-solving strategies employed, creativity demonstrated in the project, and the overall outcome of the collaborative endeavor.
It’s important when creating objectives that they clearly align with the goals set for the course. The evaluation stage in which the assessments are implemented should clearly show whether or not a student understood the content and applied their knowledge. Along with this it’s crucial that instructors provide clear instructions and relevant learning materials to support student learning. By incorporating these aspects, instructors will receive insight into the effectiveness of the course content and gain understanding of where adjustments are needed.
